It's half past the future, and although humanity's nearly destroyed itself, it's also risen out of its ashes to claim the stars. Space travel between planets is not only feasible but common, even if the trips are still a bit lengthy and inconvenient, and almost the entire Solar System has been terraformed and settled.
People in space means a lot of junk in space, though, from abandoned space stations that were used as temporary homes during the terraforming process to old, dead spaceships that got lost on their way to their destinations to just plain old trash. And where trash is, there are salvagers, looking to make a quick credit or two off of whatever valuable-looking crap they can find. It's not the most legal job, but most of the companies and people that were technically in ownership of the recovered property aren't in the position to complain.
Despite how unglamorous it is, it does still have a certain draw to it— especially to reckless young men like Kai. Having grown up on Jupiter, near the large center of activity that was the starport between the inner and outer sections of the solar system, Kai became obsessed with the idea of roaming space fairly early on in his life.
There was only one problem, though: running a ship was expensive, and when you're a salvager-slash-archeologist money tends to come only in irregular drips and windfalls. So, to cut costs, Kai had a bright idea: instead of hiring himself a crew like a sensible person, he'd trade on some favors and family ties to modify himself with cybernetics that would allow him to control a ship all by himself, by feeling it as an extension of his own body.
Sure, he has to share brain space with an AI since human brains aren't quite meant to multitask as much as the ship needs on their own! And he has to spend disgusting amounts of time hooked up in the driver's seat of the ship! And sure, he can't stay unplugged for longer than a few days without starting to go stir-crazy because it feels like he's missing chunks of himself, which makes spending any amount of time on an actual planet sort of difficult. But hey, it's not so bad! The AI is basically a big, eager puppy—moreso when he gives it a bunch of wolf-shaped robot bodies to give him some company during long months in space, and to allow them some extra hands to use around the ship. It's certainly better company than some people he's dealt with. And really, what's to miss about being planet-bound when he's got the stars?
objective: Sensory deprivation. Since Kai's not going to be able to have his wolf-bodies in Court (at least not without saving up a hell of a lot of silver, first) or his ship in Court, he's already working with feeling like he's missing some of his senses. Losing the senses of his "real" body as well will mess with his head, the already fuzzy boundaries of his physical self, and sense of stability in a way that would be a lot of fun to play with.

- SPACE OPERAAA think weird mashup of Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Larry Niven's works
- A third world war happened just as humankind was starting to terraform and colonize other planets, trashing Earth, killing a lot of people, and creating a mass exodus to outer space
- Kai is a self-labeled archeologist/salvager— explores old ships/space stations/remnants of said exodus for bits of history and things he can sell
- SPACE INDIANA JONES or at least that's what he thinks of himself as when he's not whining about the latest odd job he's had to take for money
- buuut he's actually just a huge goofy history nerd and also kind of an idiot.
